Here in Vancouver specifically, there is a push to be the greenest city in the world by 2020. While this is a great goal to strive for, we would like to see a higher conversion from traditional products to green products. We carry the only recycled playground equipment in North America (PDP) as well as some of the best recycled rubber tile playground surfacing (SofSurfaces) on the market and have lots of interest in our products. For many of those that want the green element and contact us regarding it, price becomes an issue. Everyone is on board for green products and thinking until they see the price tag, which can be significantly higher than the traditional choices out there. We see many municipalities pushing for green alternative ideas and now it’s about turning those ideas into a realization. We were lucky to be part of Vancouver’s green initiative by installing 6,500 SqF of our SofTile for Emery Barnes Park in downtown.

It’s still early in 2011, so we are hopeful that the push for green alternatives will gain momentum as time goes on. If you know someone looking for green playgrounds, green site furnishings or green playground surfacing, point them in our direction!

We expanded our Reclaim Recycled Products line by  officially launching the “I-Line” and the “Organic Objects” line, both to great acclaim. Our I-Line is manufactured using reclaimed materials (reclaimed fir wood and salvaged structural i-beam) while our Organic Objects line is made completely from dead fall. We were able to specify a number of products from each line for several different projects (including Kitsilano Beach here in Vancouver).

We have also recently begun working on our “Internal Affairs” line which uses the same materials as the I-Line but is intended for indoor application. We noticed the demand for green furnishings early on and our Reclaim Recycled Products brand addresses this need with simple but stylish and functional options.

Our online store, The Landscape Architect Superstore has continued to build momentum since its inception. More than just a store, a tool really for LA’s worldwide, LASS has gained a loyal following. With the ability to create projects, download photos, spec/info sheets, CAD files and email projects to clients it’s obvious why LA’s & contractors alike are turning to it. We continue to rotate our catalogue, adding new items as demand warrants. If you haven’t been there yet, make sure you take a moment to check it out!

All in all, 2010 was another great year for Urban Green. We hope that next year will provide us with new opportunities and a chance to showcase all of our new Reclaim products which have already come quite a ways since the design phase.

Bring on the new year!

We implemented the ‘building with garbage’ concept and came up with the I-Bench.  The I-Bench came together very easily.  The materials just work well together.

It’s really simple, but equally as effective.  We’ve systemized the process of creating the I-Bench and brought the price down to make it one of the most cost effective commercial park benches on the market.

The I-Bench exceeds in various categories:

In terms of design, the I-Bench is modern and has a simplicity that is reminiscent of the Bauhaus era. It is sturdy-looking and timeless.  It’s the type of bench you could find amongst ultra modern or traditional architecture just the same.

In terms of materials and construction, it’s virtually bomb-proof.  There’s a reason the materials that compose the I-bench have been re-incarnated, they are extremely heavy-duty.

In terms of being green, the I-Bench takes the ideal to a new level.  What better way to pick up LEED points?  Not to mention style points.

And finally, its budgetary footprint is a minimal as it’s planetary footprint.  Going green never made more sense.
