Reclaim™ Recycled Products

This is a small division of our company that specializes in creating outdoor benches using reclaimed BC Cedar that we extract from the woods near Squamish. After a bit of exploration along the logging roads up there, we found a large rock slide on the side of a mountain that had taken out an entire grove of old growth cedar. The wood looked to be in pretty bad shape, but I could tell by cutting into it that there was alot of excellent material left (and it smelled amazing!). The picture on the right is the truckload that we were able to pull out on one trip using big green.

Below you will find a bunch of pictures of the outdoor furniture that we created with this reclaimed cedar along with some other elements that were built using recycled cedar (although not pulled from the bush).

Building with garbage has proven to not only be a good element for our business but it is extremely rewarding as well. I can’t think of a better example of ‘adding value’ than repurposing waste materials. A large percentage of the elements in our Charleson Park job were fashioned out of garbage. The Trellis’, decks, and sheds were fabricated using 100% reclaimed cedar that we salvaged from a University library renovation project free of charge. We de-nailed the wood and ran it through a thickness planer. It came out looking brand new – or even better in my opinion, as it had some added character to it. The frames for the sheds and decks were built out of the heavy-duty pallets that the play equipment was shipped on. The pallets were made from excellent treated (borax) wood and we saved on both ends – not having to dispose of used wood or buy and have new wood delivered. It was great!

The benches mentioned above are another terrific example of how building with waste material is a green practice and can also be financially rewarding (saving $$$ on materials). We had to hunt for awhile but we found a perfect fallen 80′ yellow cedar right by the side of the road – prime pickings (not having to buck 300 lbs logs down a mountain is always a plus in my book). We chopped it up and hauled it back. It just happened to be the right diameter to fit nicely on a deck we built for the Charleson Park project. I was extremely happy with how it turned out (pictures can be found below).
